His father died of tuberculosis in May of 1920. John, Mary and Vicky were confined to the tuberculosis sanitarium for observation and were discharged when they were shown to be free of the disease.
The 1930 census lists his occupation as "steel worker." Marriage took place at St. Michael's in South Chicago. Lived in Lansing, Illinois for about 1 year after the wedding. There he raised mink and asparagus, while continuing to work for United StatesSteel, South Works, on the billet dock. In 1948 he opened Midway Hardware at 1145 E. 95th Street, Chicago. Sold the hardware business in 1958. He opened hot dog-hamburger business at 2137 E. 87th Street, Chicago (across from Chicago Vocational High School. In 1966 he converted the store to a pizza business. He also was employed during the summers at Holy Cross Cemetery, Calumet City. After closing the pizza business, he worked
in a warehouse in Calumet City, managed a news agency in South Chicago and worked for Folllet's book store in downtown Chicago. He died at South Chicago Community Hospital. His funeral was held at St. Michael's Church in South Chicago. He is buried in Holy Cross Cemetery, Section 18, Block 34, Lot 28, Grave 3.
